BE A LIFESAVER THIS SUMMER

FALLS CHURCH, Va., June 2018 - This summer, the Armed Services Blood Program encourages you to be a lifesaver by donating blood.

“Our program relies on the support of our donors at all times; we encourage you stay involved this summer,” said Navy Capt. Roland Fahie, director, ASBP. “ The entirety of the blood donation process can take as little as an hour of your time- making it possible to schedule alongside seasonal activities. It is a great way to create a meaningful vacation memory with your loved ones as you enjoy the summer.”

Historically, summer months experience a downtrend in blood donation due to factors such as irregular schedules, vacations and military assignment changes. However, even as people step away from their routines, the need for blood products remains steady; an average of 400 units of blood per day is required to sustain the military medical system.
The ASBP, a joint organization, has been the exclusive provider of blood and blood products for the United States military since 1962. It is the mission of ASBP to ensure that there is a steady and safe blood supply consistently available to distribute to ill or injured service members, veterans and their families around the world.

Human blood cannot be artificially reproduced. With limitations such as travel deferrals within the military population and the short shelf life of blood, preserving a large and steady base of people coming into donate regularly is essential- blood may be needed at any time and donors are the only path to meeting that need. Consider donating blood or platelets as part of your summer plans and help ASBP save lives throughout the season. Find a donor center or drive near you by visiting militarydonor.com.

“Join us this summer at one of our blood centers or drives where you can kick back, roll up a sleeve and contribute to our critical work of saving lives,” added Fahie. “Our mission is to provide our military family with the blood they need whenever and wherever they need it. Your blood donation helps us fulfill that mission and makes you a lifesaver.”

About the Armed Services Blood Program
Since 1962, the Armed Services Blood Program has served as the sole provider of blood for the United States military. As a tri-service organization, the ASBP collects, processes, stores and distributes blood and blood products to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and their families worldwide. As one of four national blood collection organizations trusted to ensure the nation has a safe, potent blood supply, the ASBP works closely with our civilian counterparts by sharing donors on military installations where there are no military blood collection centers and by sharing blood products in times of need to maximize availability of this national treasure.
