Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Proudly Supports the Troops
By Shawntel Trowell, ASBP Blood Donor Recruiter, National Capital Region
Jeff Foster, wellness coordinator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, is happy to stand by the aircraft carrier picture on the Armed Services Blood Bank Center’s blood mobile. Foster was one of the blood drive coordinators for this event.
The Armed Services Blood Bank Center for the National Capital Region used the blood mobile to hold their first blood drive with the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services March 30.
“Blood donations are important for all; however, the Armed Services Blood Program directly serves the troops and their families,” said Navy veteran Jeff Foster, wellness coordinator for CMS and one of the blood drive coordinators. “I especially like that the blood collected helps to save lives on the battlefield.”
Foster served as a corpsman at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., from 2003-2006, when it was called National Naval Medical Center. He served as a physical therapy technician during the height of the Iraq War. Therefore, he knows the importance of what blood products can do.
Donors were so ecstatic about donating for the troops, that they asked when they could do this again.
“It’s a rewarding experience to give back to the troops,” said Jonathan Rose, who works as a provider enrollment specialist for CMS.
CMS also has staff members that belong to the U.S. Public Health Services, a uniformed service. Cmdr. Lisa Jarvis-Durham, who is also a former Air Force officer, said she truly supports the program and will do what she can to ensure the ASBP returns to CMS in the future.
About the Armed Services Blood Program
Since 1962, the Armed Services Blood Program has served as the sole provider of blood for the United States military. As a tri-service organization, the ASBP collects, processes, stores and distributes blood and blood products to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and their families worldwide. As one of four national blood collection organizations trusted to ensure the nation has a safe, potent blood supply, the ASBP works closely with our civilian counterparts by sharing donors on military installations where there are no military blood collection centers and by sharing blood products in times of need to maximize availability of this national treasure.
